Overview

To fulfill our player development objectives it is important for the Club to continue to strongly support our volunteer coaches with their own coach development program. The following is provided to give our coaches an idea of what they can expect from the Club in terms of support during the upcoming season.

Coach Meetings

It is anticipated the game schedules will start as follows:

  • U11 to U18 Rep team game schedules will start on September 10th
  • U11 to U18 non Rep team game schedules on September 17th
  • U6 to U10 game schedules will start on September 24th

During the week of August 29th, we plan on having a coach meeting with our Rep team coaches.

During the week of September 5th, we plan on having a coach meeting with our mini/micro and non Rep coaches.

These meetings will go over our plans for player and coach development.

Coaches Logistics day and Coaching Clinic

On Saturday September 10th and 17th we plan on holding Mandatory Coach Logistics Days and Coaching Clinics for mini/micro and non Rep team coaches as follows:

  • Saturday September 10th – 9am – 11am, U11 to U18 coaches turf field #9
  • Saturday September 17th – 9am – 11am, U6 to U10 coaches turf field #9

At these sessions the Club’s Professional Coaching Staff will discuss game day logistics such as setting up the fields, putting up portable nets and basic rules especially for the younger age groups.

At these sessions the Club’s Professional Coaching Staff will also present four coaching technique topics:

  • Passing/Receiving
  • Dribbling/Close Control/Feints
  • Shooting/Finishing; and
  • 1v1 Defending moving to 2v2 (3v3) over the course of the season

These topics will be broken down into 30 minute segments consisting of a 10 minute soccer specific warm up and 20 minutes on a technique topic.

  • Coaches will be required to work on these topics for the entire season These 30 minute segments will be used to demonstrate and teach the proper techniques ONLY. The Club’s Professional Coaching staff will explain briefly how to deliver sessions properly and how they might be progressed. To show sessions in their entirety would take too long and there are a variety of sessions that can be run on each topic. Tactical elements such as spatial awareness, shape, formations (especially for the older players) can be taught in the small sided game that should end all of their sessions. These small sided games should be structured in such a way so that the players get the maximum exposure to the technique topic. Coaches will be reminded to not to forget or move away from what they have been working on during the session.
  • Along with this clinic the Club will supply the coaches with the Club’s Coaching Curriculum that contains a season long program outline that is structured to their specific age group that will be asked to follow. In addition the Club will supply coaches with the BC Soccer Grassroots handbook containing several warm up activities and sessions.
  • The Club’s recommendation is to select 4 or 5 sessions and repeat them over the season. Repetition on what the players need at certain age/levels is essential for their development.
  • During the season a member of our Professional coaching staff will attend at least one  session for each team to monitor the coaches progress, run a session on the coaches chosen topic (above topics only) which they will be then be asked to deliver at their next session. This session likely will not have professional attendance due to the number of teams we have to get through in a season.
  • The two hour coaching clinic will be repeated for all coaches again after Christmas in early January.

Coach Support

In addition to the above, during the season members of the Club’s Professional Coaching Staff will be available to work with coaches and their teams while they are on either of the turf fields at their allocated times. Once our scheduling is complete for the Fall season we’ll be able to give more information on our plans to support our volunteer coaches.

Coach Feedback

The Professional Coaching Staff will provide written or oral feedback to our Non Rep and Rep volunteer coaches in the U11 to U18 age levels. Feedback for mini/micro coaches is available upon request basis. The frequency and timing of this feedback will depend on the age group and level being coached.

To identify coaches strengths and areas to work on we plan on continuing to use the standardized feed-back form that we have used in the past.

Coaching Qualifications

To better assist in the development of our players and coaches, it is very important for our coaches to continue to receive formalized training. It is the Club’s objective to have at least one coach of each team that has the appropriate qualifications to coach at that level. The following are the courses that our coaches are expected to have:

  • U6 and U7 – Minimum Community Coaching course (CCC)
  • U8, U9, U10  – Minimum the Community Coaching Youth course (CCY)
  • U11 House – Minimum Community Coaching Youth course (CCY)
  • U11 Red – Minimum Community Coaching Youth course (CCS)
  • U12 Bronze – Minimum Community Coaching Youth course (CCY)
  • U12 Gold and Silver – Minimum Community Coaching Senior course (CCS)
  • U13-U18 Bronze – Minimum Community Coaching Senior course (CCS)
  • U13-U18 Gold and Silver – B-Provincial (relevant for coaching in provincial cup)

Peace Arch will contribute towards the payment of the costs associated with the taking of these courses.

Coach Club Wear

While on the fields for both practices and games it is expected that ALL coaches are to be dressed appropriately. The Club Wear Program that was established last year will continue. The Peace Arch brand is available to all coaches and purchases can be made from our Club store through the website www.soccerclubwear.com/peacearch.
